Privacy Policy
Information I collect
These apps do not ask you to create an account and do not gather personal data. I do not collect your name, email address, location or contacts, and I never ask you to identify yourself. The only information collected is anonymous analytics and crash data, described below. Everything else you do in an app — the instruments you pick, the tunings you set, the notes you play — stays on your device.
Microphone and audio
The four apps differ here, so each is described separately.
- Centz needs the microphone to hear your instrument and measure its pitch. Audio from the microphone is analysed live, on your device, purely to detect the note you are playing and how far it is from being in tune. It is never recorded, never stored and never sent anywhere. The app only listens while a tuner screen is open.
- Rechord needs the microphone to do its job: it listens to your guitar or piano so it can name the chord you play. That listening happens live and entirely on your device. The microphone is only active while you are naming a chord, and the audio is never recorded, saved or transmitted anywhere — it is analysed in the moment and discarded.
- Pendl is a metronome: it plays a click, it does not listen. The app does not request microphone access and never records or transmits any audio. Sound is generated on your device and played back through your speaker or headphones.
- Chordology does not use the microphone.
Analytics data
I collect anonymous analytics about how each app is used — for example which features are opened and how the app is navigated. I use this only to understand how people use these apps so I can improve the experience. This data is not linked to your identity in any way and is never used to track you across apps, services or over time.
Crash data
I collect anonymous crash reports so I can find and fix problems and keep the apps stable. I use this only to reduce the number of crashes. Like the analytics above, crash data is not linked to your identity and is never used to track you.
How the apps work
- On-device only. Chord and scale lookup, pitch detection, chord recognition, and the metronome engine and its timing are all computed locally. The core of each app does not require an internet connection to work.
- Nothing recorded. Where an app listens, audio is analysed live and discarded; it is never written to disk or sent off your device.
- Anonymous analytics only. The analytics and crash data these apps collect are anonymous and are used purely to improve them and fix bugs. They are not tied to your identity.
Purchases
Any in-app purchase is handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. These apps never see or store your payment details. Apple manages the transaction and your receipt under Apple’s own privacy policy.
Sharing a chord
If you choose to share a chord from Chordology, the content is sent only to the recipient and through the app or service you select using your device’s standard share sheet. It is not routed through, and no copy is retained on, any server.
Children’s privacy
These apps are suitable for all ages and do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13. The analytics and crash data described above are anonymous and cannot be used to identify any individual.
Changes to this policy
If this policy ever changes, I will update this page and revise the date above. Because I don’t collect contact information, material changes will be reflected here rather than sent to you directly.
